North of England League

Match 1 - 3rd May 2008

Newark AC started the season in the North of England League on 3rd May carrying on where they left off last season finishing last of the 6 teams.

The ladies team had only 3 members prepared or available to compete with the men faring better with 8.

Amy Fendley again performed courageously competing in 6 events. In the long jump she achieved a seasons best of 5.59m, uncharacteristically relinquishing her usual number 1 position to finish second, not surprisingly to UK international pentathlete and Olympic contender Jessica Ennis. Amy also had the doubtful privilege of competing against Jessica in the 100m and the javelin both of which were predictably won by Jessica (who threw a personal best of 42.45m in the javelin) with Amy finishing 3rd in the javelin (27.04m) and 5th in the 100m (13.1s). Amy also contested the 100m hurdles which she won (15.7s), the shot in which she was 2nd (8.98m) all A events and completed her day with the B event discus where she finished 2nd (16.23m). Trish Hill contested the A event discus finishing 4th (18.14m); the A event hammer with 5th place (16.20m) and earned 2 third places in the shot (6.01m) and  the javelin (16.01m). The team was completed by U17 Sarah Fryer, competing as a senior, who came 4th in the A triple jump (8.62m) and 5th in the B competition 100m (14.2s).

Tom Beaumont contested five A events finishing 1st in the triple jump (12.93m) 2nd in the long jump (6.30m), 3rd in the javelin (43.62m) 4th equal in the high jump (1.65m) and 5th in the shot (9.17m). Multi talented Simon Langley contested a total of 6 events comprising two A events , the hammer in which he finished 4th with a new Newark AC club record of 32.22m and the discus in which he finished 4th (31.41m). In the B competition Simon was 1st in the javelin (38.54m), 2nd in the long jump (5.18m) 3rd in the high jump (1.40m) and 5th in the triple jump (9.58m). Tim Bagguley contested three A events – the 200m (26.0s) the 400m (59.4s) and the 800m (2m 19.2) finishing 5th in each of them. Mick Barnes was involved in three events -two in the A competition attaining 4th in the 5000m (20m50.6) 5th in the 1500m (5m.19.0) and 3rd in the B event 800m (2m.33.9). Gary Springett came 5th in the A 100m (12.8s) and 4th in the B 200m (27.8s). Paul Smith, in the B competition, came 4th in the hammer (23.21m) and the shot (8.82m) with 5th position in the discus (23.30m). Peter Beaumont completed the team and was 4th in the B 400m (60.9s) and 5th in the B 100m (13.0s).

Unfortunately, the final result leaves the club fighting relegation after only one meeting and team managers hope that more athletes will make themselves available for the next match on Sat June 7th at Cudworth.
