Record numbers set for triathlon events
Hundreds of schoolchildren are expected to take part in two of the largest triathlon events in the east midlands during the next two days.
Around 1,400 children from the Newark and Sherwood area, aged nine to 12, are set to take part in events organised as part of National Sports Week.
Last year’s inaugural event, jointly hosted by Newark and Sherwood District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council at the Grove Leisure Centre, and the Grove School, in Balderton, was attended by around 1,000 children.
This year, around 600 children from school years 5, 6 and 7 in the Newark and Sherwood area will take part in a similar event on June 30 at Joseph Whitaker Sports College, Rainworth. In addition, a further 800 children will take part in an identical event being held at The Grove Leisure Centre and The Grove School in Balderton the following day.
The triathlon involves a 50-metre swim, a 2,000-metre cycle and a 400-metre run, all of which will be organised and co-ordinated by One Step Beyond. The company, which has co-ordinated hundreds of multi-sport events, also provides equipment for the event.
The event aims to raise awareness of what is the fastest growing sport in the UK and to promote active sport in school and for young people, the emphasis being on participation and enjoyment.
Partnership development manager for the Newark School Sport Partnership, Anita Spray, said the event was a huge success last year and this year’s event would build on that.
Anita said: “The triathlon is non-competitive and brings together children of all abilities. Potential athletes of the future are also encouraged to maintain their interest.
“We are still looking for potential sponsors to come forward so this fantastic event can be sustained and enjoyed by future generations.”
