Bar supervisor fined for underage sale

A bar supervisor was fined £170 for selling alcohol illegally following a court appearance last week.

Andrew Morgan, 51, of the Sawmill public house, Beacon Hill Road, Newark, pleaded guilty to selling alcohol to a person under 18 when he appeared at Newark Magistrates Court on Tuesday 20 July.

He was prosecuted after police ran a test purchase operation at the Sawmill public house on February 12.

A 15-year-old male volunteer was accompanied by two plain-clothed officers who watched him buy three bottles of beer at the bar without being asked to prove he was over 18.

Normally, the person selling the alcohol would have been issued with an £80 Fixed Penalty Notice, but Andrew Morgan, who made the sale, was the Designated Premises Supervisor with day-to-day responsibility for running the premises.

He was summonsed to appear at court and pleaded guilty to the offence.

Commenting on the case, Paul Inman, Divisional Licensing Officer for Newark and Sherwood, said: “It is important that anyone who sells alcohol is fully aware of their responsibilities and the fact that they will be held personally responsible if they are found to have sold alcohol to under 18s.

“We will continue to ensure all bar staff are compliant with the law by carrying out regular test purchase operations in the area.”
