Czech Scouts set up exchange camp in Newark

Eighty Scouts from Newark host an international experience right on their doorstep. Fourty Scouts from Kolin in the Czech Republic have travelled for 36 hours by coach to make camp in the grounds of Kelham Hall near Newark as part of a giant exchange programme that saw over 30 Newark Scouts visit Kolin for 2 weeks last year.

The Newark Scouts are providing a packed itinerary for their Czech friends to make sure they see the best of what the local area has to offer; they plan to take them to a roller disco and swimming in Southwell; enjoy water activities at Farndon; go walking and biking in Derbyshire; climbing, caving, archery and high ropes at nearby Walesby Forest Scout Activity Centre; they will be challenged to a treasure hunt in Rufford Park; and will also spend a day in Newark town centre, visiting the Castle, Church and Town Hall where they will be hosted by the Mayor Tony Roberts.

International development is at the heart of Scouting and one of its core aims says Matt Rooney of the Nottinghamshire Scouts "This event clearly shows the Newark and Czech Scouts commitment to making the world a better place; by celebrating cultures and ideas they are showing the world that it is possible for people from different countries to get along and learn from each other"

Richard Moyses of the Newark Scouts said this event was a real coup for Newark "We are really proud of where we come from and we are so pleased that we are able to show our Czech counterparts all of the places and things that make our community so special. The Scouts are having a brilliant time and are excited about the week ahead."

The 2 week extravaganza has been 12 months in the planning and has been organised by a core team of volunteers with support from the Newark and Sherwood Council who have provided an amazing setting for this special event.

May Cudlipp, 15 an Explorer Scout from 6th Newark Explorer Scouts said "I've met everybody already and they're all really cool, its really exciting and I'm looking forward to doing all of the activities. It's amazing!"

Michal Safra, 18 a Scout from the Czech Republic said "This is my second time in the UK and I enjoy it very much, I have made lots of new friends and seen some old ones too. I am looking forward to seeing the sea as we are far away at home."
