Newark A&E downgrading debated in Westminster

Mr Simon Burns has said that the Newark Healthcare Review does in fact meet government criteria for changes to happen to the NHS services.

After speaking to Mr Patrick Mercer, the MP of Newark, Mr Burns said that the review met the tests set by the government.

After the changes the NHS must focus on the patient, and must acknowledge the patient choice and have support from GP commissioners. They must also be based on sound clinical evidence.

The MP of Newark thought it was all still to play for even after the County Council’s health meeting yesterday where they decided not to call in the health care review.

Mr Mercer said the debate, also attended by the MP for Sherwood, Mr Mark Spencer, had helped to raise Newark Hospital from a local to a national issue.

Throughout the debate Mr Mercer raised his concerns for the loss of services in the hospital.

Mr Burns reassured him however by showing him the clear reasons why the emergency patients would not be able to be treated at Newark hospital any longer.
