Second half fight back fails to secure win : Derby 33 vs 21 Newark

Great 2nd half fight back fails to secure victory.

The trip to Derby was always going to be a tough one, since they have had all their NLD U18 players back half way through the season they are unbeaten in the league, they have steadily been climbing back up the table and now stand fourth with Newark 5th.

We travelled with a number of key players unavailable for one reason or another and both first choice hookers missing there were wholesale changes forced on the coaches, in came Joe Cooke at hooker, who has stepped up to the mark a couple of times this season, although no longer a regular squad player.

With Matt Boddy's performance in recent games at scrum half he was first choice this week and again gave a great performance. Since Jason Mattysz's return from a broken shoulder he has continued to impress the coaches and is rapidly making the No 6 shirt his own. The other flank was filled by Ed Cocker who usually plays centre or wing but he also had a good game with the pack.

The first half Newark were mere spectators as Derby's big pack and slick backs made in roads into the Newark defence and were 7 - 0 up after four minutes and after 12 minutes we were 14 - 0 down.

These problems were compounded when Josh Killingsworth received a yellow card on 17 minutes for a late tackle.

Derby took full advantage and scored two more tries and a conversion before the ref blew for half time. It looked as though it was going to be a very long afternoon.

Half time Derby 26 Newark 0.

The half time talk seemed to galvanise Newark into action and they looked like a different team when they came out. They took control of the game with some great handling and support play.

Two minutes into the 2nd half when George Stewart finished a slick move won from a ruck and passed through the hands to go over under the posts then converted his own try.

26 - 7

With injuries mounting we saw prop Joe Tinsley go off with an injured ankle and, with no front row replacements, it was uncontested scrums. This did not do Newark any favours because their scrummaging was excellent against a much bigger pack.

Despite some pressure the Newark defence held against the determined Derby attack and saw Harry Cotton force his way over the line with some great support by the rest of the forwards and George Stewart slotted over the conversion.

26 - 14

A minute later a trade mark tackle breaking run from full back Bradley Robinson saw him power over the line under the posts for a great score which again George Stewart put between the posts.

26 - 21

Newark seemed to be in control and were taking the ball to Derby at every opportunity. There were some great runs from wingers Jamie Graham and Leon Batterham who both made try saving tackles throughout the game.

With less than five minutes to go it was a nail biting finale where Newark believed they could pull off a great upset as they put pressure on Derby.

With only a couple of minutes to go Newark had a great attacking position just inside our own half but over enthusiasm getting the ball out put pressure on our back which caused a fumble and Derby picked the ball up to score an easy converted try, 33 - 21 a sickening end to a every exciting second half.

This was a great effort by the whole team after a slow start and bodes well for the next round of the National U17's competition when Newark take on high flying Old Northamptonians next Sunday at Kelham Road 12md kick off.
