Match Report: Sutton Town v Newark Town

Newark battled back from 2-0 down, to secure a well deserved point at fellow high flyers Sutton Town, although it was the result that neither side wanted. Newark made numerous changes from the draw against Kimberley, with Ian Wade, Simon Ellison, Dave Issott and Simon Greenfield all returning to the starting line up.

On a heavy pitch, the match started brightly, with both sides creating clear chances early on. Three minutes in, the Blues left Hadfield unmarked from a corner, but the midfielder’s free header was comfortably saved by Chris Riley.  A minute later, Dave Issott headed wide after a good cross from Chris Self. Despite this positive start, the game turned scrappy with neither side able totake the initiative. Playing down the slope in the first half, Newark were looking to use this advantage, but they failed to really test the keeper in the first half. Martin Wilson went close on 31 minutes, but his 25 yard strike went wide of the right hand post.

Three minutes later  Simon Ellison beat the offside trap, and after a strong run, played the ball back to Issott, who shot high over the bar when well placed. As the match approached half time, Sutton began to show the form expected of them, creating a number of good chances, the most notable coming from Mensa, who should have directed his header on target when well placed. Sutton made this late pressure count, and in virtually the last action of the first half, Kay played a deep free kick to Colley, who volleyed in past Riley to give the hosts the half time lead.

Sutton dominated the start of the second half, and could’ve doubled their advantage on 47 minutes, when Mensa stole the ball from Greenfield and ran through on goal. However the striker took one touch too many, allowing Riley to smother the ball. Five minutes later, Sutton had another opportunity, but Forbes header only just cleared the bar, as he rose highest from a free kick. On 59 minutes, Mensa beat Riley to a through ball, and took the ball past the keeper, however off balance the striker’s eventual poke towards goal was easily turned behind for a corner by Ian Wade. From the corner, Kay put another dangerous set piece into the box, which was eventually nodded into the back of the net by Colley for his second of the game.

Just 3 minutes later, Newark responded to this setback in the best possible way, scoring with their first real effort on target. Simon Ellison crossed to brother Mark, who flicked the ball up and executed an overhead kick perfectly to lift the ball over English in the Sutton goal. On 66 minutes, a mistimed tackle from Ricky Brewer resulted in a second yellow card, reducing the Blues to 10 men. However, as he was leaving the pitch, Colley lashed out at Brewer, earning himself a red card. This seemed to lift Newark, and they got a deserved equaliser on 84 minutes, when Wade played a beautiful ball down the line to Simon Ellison, who shot across the keeper to complete the comeback. The Blues almost won the match with just three minutes left, when an inch perfect cross from Ian Wade found substitute Ben Ginnelly , who couldn’t quite direct his header on target when well placed.

After the match, Assistant Manager Paul Ellison said “Overall, it was a well fought game, we battled hard, and we could have come away with all three points if we hadn’t made some silly mistakes”. Newark will be looking for similar commitment when they face bottom club Grantham Rangers on Tuesday.
