Major regeneration scheme about to start

The new ASDA supermarket development on Newark’s Potterdyke car park has moved a step closer with news of temporary arrangements to be put in place when the bus station closes at the end of May.

A new bus station is to be constructed by ASDA on the site. During construction works temporary arrangements will be made to relocate the bus stops on-street at Castlegate, Lombard Street and the Town Wharf. Notices will be sent out to residents and traders adjacent to the new bus stops informing them of the temporary traffic arrangements.

Newark and Sherwood District Council granted permission in November 2008 for a new 5,715 sqm ASDA store, along with the new bus facility, doctor’s surgery, health centre, retail units, housing and 411 car parking spaces, on the current site. ASDA is aiming to open its new store by Christmas 2011, with the new bus station opening at the same time.

Newark and Sherwood District Council’s cabinet member for sustainable development and regeneration, Cllr Roger Blaney, said: “Regrettably, these temporary arrangements are likely to lead to some disruption to businesses, motorists and bus passengers.

“However, this activity shows the project is gathering pace and once complete will provide the people of Newark with a new ASDA supermarket as well as replacement car parking facilities, a new bus station, doctors’ surgery, a health centre building and modern shop units.”

The existing bus station will close on the evening of Saturday May 29, 2010. After this date passengers will be directed to use new on-street bus stops.  Information will be made available to enable passengers to find their new stop and to make things even easier. Bus stewards will be available during the first week to help guide people to the right stop.

On-street parking will not be permitted at The Wharf, from Bargate to Beastmarket Hill, after May 29. Also, movement of traffic will be one way only, from Bargate to Beastmarket Hill, and will only be allowed to turn left at the Beastmarket Hill junction with The Town Wharf.

In the spring a new health centre will be constructed on Portland Street as part of the scheme and will house services currently located in the Newark Health Clinic including dentistry, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and district nursing.

Tim Bradford, Partner of Banks Long & Co, agents for M.F. Strawson which is building the new health centre, said: “The new health centre will be a modern and welcoming environment, providing the best quality of care.”
The new ASDA store will be the retail anchor of the Potterdyke redevelopment. The store will have a 32,500 sq ft sales area which will include the full ASDA food range and non-food goods including George clothing. The store will create more than 300 full and part-time jobs for local people.

Tom McGarry, ASDA Property Communications Manager, said "We are very excited about delivering this project in partnership with the local authorities and MF Strawson Limited.

“A lot of local people do not do their weekly grocery shopping in Newark, with more than 60% going to other major centres in the area. The arrival of ASDA's award winning low prices will help keep retail expenditure in the town. We are looking forward to getting started and opening the store by Christmas next year."

Councillor Richard Jackson, Nottinghamshire County Council Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, said: "I am very pleased that we have now reached this stage. During construction of Newark's new bus station, we will be providing temporary bus stops on nearby streets and providing as much information as we can to make sure passengers know where to go. This will include having stewards on the streets to point people in the right direction and answer their questions."

The county council is contributing £275,000 towards the building and fitting out of the new bus station, and will operate it once it's open.
