NEWARK LADIES ARE NOTTS PREMIER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS
Newark travelled to Nottingham University on Saturday, with the chance of sealing the league title.
The day didn’t start well though as the unorganised hosts failed to open the pitch in time for a decent warm up & Newark’s young star, Charlotte Mills was absent, stuck in traffic.
With Newark only having 10 players, assistant coach Sally Davies stepped in to ensure the team started the game with 11 players.
Unusually the visitors were slow out of the blocks & the first 10 minutes was an end to end encounter. On 7 minutes the home team forced a magnificent reaction save from Newark’s young talented goalkeeper Sophie Chambers, as she deflected the ball over the bar.
It was Captain Sarah Pask who steadied the visitor’s nerves on 11 minutes, as her solo run was far too skilful for the students & her shot left the goal keeper rooted to the spot.
Newark doubled their lead on 33 minutes when Emma Sanders finished a move created by her strike partner Emma Wilson, to give the visitors a 2 goal advantage at the break.
It was Sarah Pask who caused initial problems for the hosts, after the restart & it was a Pask run on 46 minutes which set up goal machine Emma Wilson for Newark’s 3rd.
On 48 minutes player of the match, Sarah Pask completed her brace, when she finished a penalty corner routine.
By now the league leaders were in full flow, totally dominating the game & on 50 minutes Emma Sanders scored her second goal, after a magnificent right wing run by Abigail Gordon
Emma Sanders completed her hat trick on 68 minutes, again it was made possible by the skilful movement of Abigail Gordon, but this time it was Emma Wilson who provided the final pass, to give the league leaders a deserved 6 – 0 victory.
Coach Paul Halfpenny commented “with Boots suffering a 3 – 0 home defeat, it is now no longer mathematically possible for the girls to be caught. So with 4 games still to play, Newark are already Notts Premier League Champions, & will be playing Midlands League Hockey next season”.
