Old Northamptonians 44 Newark 20

Newark were eventually overwhelmed in the last quarter after leading 20-10 early in the second half at Old Northamptonians.

First-half tries from wing Jamie Eveleigh and Buddha Waqalevu had helped Newark to a 15-10 lead at half-time which was extended after the interval by a third touchdown when flanker Will Naylor raced over. Eveleigh added one conversion and a penalty as well.

ONs dominated the last 30 minutes in which their bigger forwards took charge to engineer four tries.

Newark had played some excellent rugby in the first half. After a home penalty, a break by Lewis Cove led to a try for Eveleigh which the wing converted.

ONs replied through a try and conversion before Buddha finished a move that had featured a break by Jon Webster and Eveleigh.

The match saw Webster and Fred Tatham paired at lock in the absence of Jon Evans and the injured Liam Mather. Both did well against more experienced opponents in a pack well led by Daley Edwards.

Team: Byrom; Buddha, Collishaw, Cormack, Eveleigh; Cox, Clark; Barker, Tomlinson, Booley, Tatham, Webster, L Cove, Naylor, Edwards. Subs: Henfrey, Miller, Bratt.
