Park life experience
Young people in Newark have the chance to volunteer theirservices to contribute to local parks – while learning some valuable life skills.
The Sconce and Devon Park conservation project has been set up help restore and repair the grounds of the Newark district park. However, there is too much work required, and too little funds available, to have full time, fully paid staff in place.
So Nottinghamshire County Council’s Acorn E2E (entry to employment), have set up a scheme to get young people involved in the conservation project.
Acorn E2E help young people move into further education or training and employment by providing personal and social education and support. The young people they have recruited for the project will help by making bird boxes, laying wood chippings, weeding and painting benches.
The young people benefit from the sense of satisfaction gained from contributing to the community and working as part of a team on something they will see positive results from.
Coun Joyce Bosnjak, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said:“Acorn is a very worthwhile initiative. The young people enjoy working in the open air, and they will profit from knowing they are contributing to something valuable”.
