Local residents handed prestigious award
(Back to news) Local residents handed prestigious award![]() The winners of the award were John Franks and Madge Langham, following nominations by the tenants in recognition of the contribution they have made in their local community. In making the awards, Miss Butler explained that, since John Franks became Chairman of Lovers Lane and Welbeck Tenants and Residents Association, he has worked tirelessly for the community, and has spent hours listening to people’s problems on the phone or in person, and is a regular attendee at meetings including the Value For Money Tenants Group and various monitoring groups. John contacts the necessary agencies for tenants needing help with their repairs, thus making their lives easier and helping them remain as independent as possible. He gives of his time freely and forfeited his holiday to help with the improvement works at Tithe Barn Court. Miss Butler went on to commend Madge Langham who spends a lot of time on committees and the Tenants and Residents Association as well as helping people within the community. Madge plays the organ for Collingham Church, she sings in the choir, bakes for the fete and coffee mornings - working tirelessly for the whole of the community. She is also one of the surviving members of the Land Army who are now to be honoured for their services during the Second World War. Mr Franks, who is donating his £100 prize to the Vulcan to Sky charity, explained, “This award marks the start of much more work, not the end. There is still a lot to do in the area particularly with the work at Queen’s Court and the gardening work we are planning in Tithe Barn Court.” “Getting involved in your local community is the only way to get things done and I hope that more people will see the value in putting in a bit of time and effort for the good of everybody.” Mrs Langham, whose cheque is going to the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance, added, “It is nice to be appreciated but I always say that if you help someone else, it comes back to you a thousand times.” Miss Butler concluded, “Working in communities, as we do, Newark and Sherwood Homes relies on the enormous contribution of people like John and Madge, and we are very aware of the contribution of our volunteers. Working together enables us to fulfil our vision to deliver excellent housing services.”
