Gibson family release statment

The Family of Brian Gibson, the 20-year-old whose body was found in the River Trent in Newark on Tuesday, have today spoken of their loss.

Brian Junior Gibson, of Yorke Drive, Newark, was last seen around 9pm on Sunday 13 April 2008 close to the river.

His body was found at around 8.30am on Tuesday 29 April in the water at Bestthorpe Jetty. Police are still awaiting a post mortem result.

Brian lived with his mother Debbie Gibson and stepfather Matthew Cope. He had an older brother Matthew and younger brother Joshua. He had his own four-year-old son called Owen.

In a statement today his family said “The last couple of weeks have been traumatic, emotional and very sad for us all. Although the outcome is not what we wanted, it is of some comfort to us that Brian has been found.

“As a family we can now start to grieve for a much loved son, father, brother, grandson, uncle, nephew, cousin and second cousin.

“Losing Brian has made this family incomplete. We will cherish the happy times and memories spent with Brian.

“He was a mischievous, cheeky character. He had a big heart, lovely smile and would do anything for anybody, especially his family.

“Brian, we will miss you very much. We will never forget you. You meant so much to us all. When we think of you it will bring a smile to our faces.”

The Family would like to thank everyone from Nottinghamshire Police involved in finding Brian, the media for the publicity given, and to all the friends who have sent messages of support.
